Rodney Scott is a renowned American chef from Hemingway, South Carolina, who specializes in barbecue (roasted whole hog). He was born in Philadelphia in 1971 to parents Roosevelt and Ella Scott, and he was the only child from their marriage.
Rodney and his family moved to South Carolina in 1972, where they ran several businesses. They ran a gas station and variety store, but barbecue restaurant was something that got young Rodney very interested and started his career in a way.
When he was only eleven, he started barbecuing at his family’s store, and by the time he was seventeen, he worked there full time.
Career
Rodney Scott worked at his parent’s barbecue stop since he was only eleven. He mastered barbecuing a whole hog which was the specialty of the house. In 2011, he took over the family business and took it to the next level.
During this period, he received an interesting comment from his business partner to be, Nick Pihakis, who told him that he was not charging enough for his food. In 2016, he had an argument with his father, after which he left the family business and partnered with Nick Pihakis, with whom he made a massive success in the upcoming years.
In 2017, Rodney opened his first restaurant that was located in Charleston. The restaurant’s name was Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Soon enough, another location opened in Birmingham in 2019 and in Atlanta in 2024. He plans to open another restaurant in Homewood, Alabama, in the upcoming future.
In 2024 he stared in an episode of Netflix’s Emmy nominated show Chef’s Table: BBQ. The show explores barbecue chefs and pitmasters worldwide. In this 45 minute episode, he introduced the audience to his barbecuing techniques.

In 2018 Rodney Scott got his first big recognition in his barbecuing career. He was the only second pitmaster in history to be named Best Chef: Southeast, recognized by James Beard Foundation. He was featured in various cooking magazines, The Washington Post, and Texas Monthly. He was even nominated to the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2024 during which, he made some of the biggest successes in his career.
